Scouting was established in Sligo in 1932 with the formation of the 2nd Sligo Scout Troop. It’s first investiture was held on 6th December in the Gillooly Hall. The first Scoutmaster was Martin Pilkington and his assistant was James Gannon. Due to great demand, the 3rd Sligo was formed in September 1933 and the 10th Sligo in the 1980s. The three sections merged to form the 2nd, 3rd & 10th Sligo (Town) Scout Group.
The Gillooly Hall was the home of Sligo scouting until 1968 when the then Bishop of Elphin, Bishop Vincent Hanly permitted the Troop to convert the stables in the Peace Park into a Scout Den. It was officially opened in 1971 by Bishop Conway.
Our Group have Beaver, Cub and Scout sections and we host the Yeats Scout County Venture section. Located at the heart of Sligo Town, we are an active outdoor organisation that aims to give young people a chance to experience the great outdoors and learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, leadership and self-sufficiency through an enjoyable environment. We cater for young people from the age of 6 to 25, for boys and girls, and have regular meetings and events throughout the scout year.
The Group is registered with the CRA as a charitable organisation.
As of 6th December 2022, our group will be 90 years old and is one of the oldest groups in the country.
2nd, 3rd & 10th Sligo (Town) Scout Group is a proud community of volunteers dedicated to educating children and adults in various survival skills.
We aim to continue the tradition of Scouting in the North West for another 90 years.
